Speaker Deep Dive | Daan Schraven - Research Unleashed 2026
What does it take to make circular construction not just technically possible, but economically sustainable? During Research Unleashed 2026, Daan Schraven will share insights from his work on the new economy of the built environment — focusing on how economic frameworks and business models can accelerate the transition to a circular and resilient construction sector.
Daan is an Associate Professor of New Economics in the Built Environment at TU Delft. His research explores how economic systems and business models can enable sustainable transitions, particularly in construction and urban contexts. Instead of focusing solely on technologies, Daan emphasizes the importance of economic feasibility and social value in making circular approaches truly viable in practice.
In his work, he highlights that while many circular technologies exist, the real challenge lies in creating business models that make them economically attractive without long-term subsidies. This means developing frameworks that reward value creation, meaningful reuse and transformation of materials, and resilient economic systems — so that circular construction becomes a “no-brainer” choice for industry, policy and communities alike.inden, ontstaan nieuwe bouwdetails die natuur inclusiever, robuuster en beter integreerbaar.
